When Nick called me just a few days before his proposal, I could hear the excitement in his voice. The ring had just arrived, and he was planning a weekend getaway from San Diego to Santa Ynez. Like so many couples, Nick did what most people do when they’re planning something this important—he Googled “best place to propose in Santa Ynez.” That search led him straight to my blog featuring Jake and Emily’s proposal at Sunstone Winery, and he was immediately sold on the property’s timeless beauty and romantic atmosphere.

Finding the Perfect Proposal Location at Sunstone Winery

Nick reached out hoping I’d be available, but timing was tight. I already had another client that morning, which is why I always recommend checking winery availability early when planning a proposal. Wineries typically prefer proposals either right at opening (around 11 AM) or toward the end of the day, when the crowds thin out and the experience feels more intimate.

Thankfully, Nick called Sunstone Winery directly and secured an 11 AM tasting, the perfect time for a quiet, romantic moment. I was able to rearrange my schedule so I could be there to capture this once-in-a-lifetime memory.

A Hidden Proposal at Sunstone Winery

I arrived just before Nick and Kelly and watched as they pulled into the parking lot. I saw Nick subtly slip the ring into his back pocket, tossing his jacket over it to keep it hidden. They grabbed their wine and began walking around the property, soaking in the beauty of Sunstone’s stone architecture and vineyard views.

Eventually, Nick texted me the spot he had chosen—a gorgeous archway doorway tucked away on the property. Just moments before he proposed, a Sunstone employee pulled up and offered to take their photo in front of the archway, then drove off. Perfect timing.

Nick set his phone down to record, took a deep breath, and got down on one knee. Kelly immediately burst into tears when she realized what was happening—and then noticed I was there capturing every second. It was an emotional, joyful, and incredibly intimate moment that made the entire morning feel magical.

Engagement Photos Around Sunstone Winery

After the proposal, we spent time walking the property together, getting to know each other while capturing engagement portraits throughout Sunstone Winery. From the iconic stone walls to the vineyard backdrops, every corner of the property offered something beautiful and romantic.

The relaxed pace of the morning allowed them to truly enjoy being newly engaged, without feeling rushed or surrounded by crowds.

Tips for Planning the Perfect Winery Proposal in Santa Ynez

If you’re planning a winery proposal, here are my biggest tips:

  • Contact the winery ahead of time to ask about proposal-friendly locations

  • Request a more intimate or secluded spot on the property

  • Plan your proposal right at opening or later in the day for fewer people

  • Weekdays tend to have more availability and a more initimate setting

  • Hire a photographer who can discreetly capture the moment

Both early mornings and evenings offer stunning light, privacy, and the chance to celebrate all day long afterward.

And while you’re at it—grab a bottle of wine to save for your one-year anniversary. It’s a simple but meaningful way to relive the moment all over again.

Sunstone Winery continues to be one of my favorite locations for proposals in Santa Ynez, and Nick and Kelly’s engagement was a beautiful reminder of why these intimate winery moments are so special.
