For Alex and Shannon, it became the beginning of a relationship filled with adventure, humor, and the kind of love that feels effortlessly alive.
And eventually, it led to a proposal at one of Shannon’s favorite places on earth — the iconic Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.
As a San Luis Obispo proposal photographer, this was one of those proposals that reminded me how meaningful it can be when a couple incorporates pieces of their story into every detail of the moment.
Planning a Proposal at Madonna Inn
Shannon absolutely loves the Madonna Inn. So when Alex started planning his proposal, he knew it had to happen there.
They already had a weekend trip planned, and Shannon quietly hoped this might be the trip where he proposed. But after they planned a relaxing pool day, she spotted a flyer advertising a “wine tasting in
the Secret Garden at Madonna Inn” and immediately convinced herself it definitely wasn’t happening.
What she didn’t know?
The flyer wasn’t real.
Alex had created it using ChatGPT and even built a bot to email it to himself so he could casually show it to her. And she completely believed it.
On the drive over, she talked herself out of the idea of a proposal entirely — even putting on sunglasses to hide her disappointment. She spent the rest of the afternoon trying to convince herself she was okay with waiting a little longer.
Little did she know, Alex had planned every detail.
The Secret Garden Proposal at Madonna Inn
After spending the day by the pool, they got ready quickly before heading down to the “wine tasting.”
Shannon wore a colorful outfit Alex had thrifted for her — something that somehow perfectly matched the vibrant colors and stained-glass charm that Madonna Inn is known for.
As they walked down the pathway into the Secret Garden at Madonna Inn, everything already felt magical.
Hidden in the bushes nearby, I watched as Alex picked up a chilled bottle of champagne I had hidden earlier on the rocks nearby. Then he played the song he first shared with Shannon when she moved from New York to California.
And that’s when she knew.
This wasn’t wine tasting.
This was her proposal.
