One of my favorite parts about photographing proposals is that for weeks, sometimes months, I’m carrying around a secret with one half of a couple.

Sean first reached out while planning a California trip for him and Jade. Originally from Ohio and currently living in Tennessee for work, they had planned a full Highway 1 road trip — flying into San Francisco, working their way down the coast, stopping at wineries, and eventually making their way into Paso Robles. Like many couples visiting California wine country for the first time, they wanted the trip to feel intentional and memorable, and somewhere along the way Sean knew he wanted this trip to become even bigger than that.

When he reached out, I sent him several of my favorite proposal locations in Paso Robles. By the time they arrived in Paso Robles, Jade had almost fully convinced herself the proposal wasn’t happening.

There had already been so many beautiful moments throughout the trip where it could have happened. Scenic coastal overlooks. Romantic winery stops. Long drives down Highway 1 at sunset. Every time one of those moments passed, she became a little more certain that maybe this just wasn’t the trip.

She later shared that when they arrived at Allegretto, she actually felt a little disappointed because she couldn’t quite picture where a proposal would even happen there. At one point, she had even texted one of her friends saying she didn’t think it was happening anymore.

Meanwhile, I had arrived earlier with a couple of girlfriends, blending into the courtyard with a bottle of wine while trying very hard to look like completely normal guests. Proposal photography is funny that way. You spend weeks coordinating timelines, locations, and logistics only to end up pretending not to stare at the people you’re actually there for.

As Sean and Jade finished their tasting, they decided to take a walk around the property. That’s when we quietly followed them toward the vineyard overlooking Allegretto.

June is one of the most beautiful times for engagement photos in Paso Robles. The gardens at Allegretto are full, the vines are vibrant green, and the golden light settles across the property in a way that feels almost cinematic.

Sean stopped along the vineyard path and asked Jade if he could take a photo of her. As she turned toward him, he set their things down, reached into his pocket, and pulled out the ring.

From a distance, I could hear her immediately say, “Are you serious right now?”

The emotion on her face was one of my favorite reactions I’ve photographed because you could tell she had genuinely spent the entire day talking herself out of believing it was happening.

After the proposal, I always like to step back for a few moments and let couples soak everything in privately before moving into portraits. Those first minutes after a proposal are emotional in a way that’s hard to describe. As we walked the property together, hearing more about their story and the adventures they’d already had during the trip, it became obvious that this proposal fit them perfectly — thoughtful, relaxed, emotional, and full of joy.
