There are some proposals that feel like they were always meant to happen in a certain place. Matthew and Allison’s Montana de Oro proposal was exactly that — meaningful, intentional, and deeply rooted in their story.
If you’re searching for the perfect place to propose on the Central Coast, Montana de Oro State Park is truly one of the most breathtaking and intimate locations in San Luis Obispo County.
How They Found Montana de Oro
Matthew and Allison met while attending UC Irvine. Early in their relationship, they planned a trip to Pismo Beach. When they arrived, they quickly realized it wasn’t quite the beach experience they were envisioning. Instead of settling, they decided to drive up the coast — and that’s when they found Montana de Oro.
What started as a spontaneous detour became one of their favorite places.
They explored trails like Valencia Peak and Spooner’s Cove, and on one hike up Valencia Peak, they noticed a sand dune tucked away in the distance. Naturally curious, they spent time wandering and figuring out how to get there. That tucked-away dune became incredibly meaningful to them.
So when Matthew began planning his proposal, he knew exactly where it needed to happen.
Planning the Perfect Montana de Oro Proposal
A few weeks before the big day, Matthew reached out with his ideas. He had thoughtfully created an album to flip through together during a sunset picnic before proposing.
Allison’s best friend, Sam — who has known her since they were four years old — would also be there as a surprise, helping film the moment.
As the proposal approached, the weather forecast showed wind and rain. One tip I always give couples planning a proposal in Montana de Oro or anywhere on the Central Coast: remain flexible if you’re traveling. Even adjusting by one day can make a huge difference.
The night before, there were strong wind gusts and constant rain.
The day of the proposal? A light breeze, partly cloudy skies, and the most beautiful golden sunset.
It couldn’t have been more perfect.
The Proposal at Valencia Peak’s Hidden Dunes
Sam and I met just before entering Montana de Oro State Park and followed each other in quietly. We found Matthew’s car and carefully made our way down the trail, sneaking behind bushes until we found them.
We waited, hunkered down behind brush, watching as they flipped through the album Matthew had created. We knew the moment he stood up would be the moment.
When he rose to his feet, we moved closer.
And then — he proposed.
After the surprise and celebration, we took photos as the sun dipped behind the coastline. Allison packed up their picnic while the sky turned soft shades of pink and gold.
It was intimate. Intentional. Completely them.
Why Montana de Oro Is One of the Best Proposal Locations in San Luis Obispo
Montana de Oro offers:
Private, nature-filled settings
Ocean views without heavy crowds
Trails with breathtaking overlooks
Spooner’s Cove for coastal cliffs and beach views
Hidden dunes perfect for intimate proposals
For couples who value nature and privacy over public attention, this state park is unmatched.
A Thoughtful Detail That Made This Proposal Even More Meaningful
Allison had once told her best friend exactly what she would want (and not want) in a proposal. She preferred:
White flowers
Warm lights like candles
Nature and intimacy
No big “Marry Me” signs
Nothing overly public
And — hilariously — she specified she didn’t want breadcrumbs on her lips.
I laughed because during my own proposal, I had just stuffed Cheez-Its in my mouth before smiling for a photo. Many of my proposal pictures are of me trying to get crackers out of my cheeks.
Allison’s concern was completely valid.
The takeaway? Having subtle conversations about preferences makes all the difference. Matthew knew exactly how to create something she would love because she had communicated it.
