As a Santa Barbara engagement photographer, there are certain sessions that feel especially meaningful — and Francesca and Connor’s engagement session at San Marcos Foothills Preserve was one of them.
Their story began 13 years ago in college in Minnesota. Technically, it was a blind date — but what makes it even sweeter is that both of them had quietly hoped their friends would set them up with the other. Francesca is originally from New York, and Connor grew up right here in Santa Barbara. So when they reached out about their engagement photos, choosing a location meaningful to Connor felt like the perfect way to honor their story.
Why San Marcos Foothills Preserve Is Perfect for Engagement Photos in Santa Barbara
If you’ve never been to San Marcos Foothills Preserve, it truly offers some of the best views in Santa Barbara for engagement photos.
Located just behind the city on a hillside, the parking lot itself overlooks the ocean with silhouettes of palm trees stretching toward the horizon. Turn around, and you’re met with the mountains and the beauty of Los Padres National Forest. It’s a location that gives you both coastal and mountain backdrops in one place — something rare and incredibly special.
We decided to spend the entire 90-minute engagement session right there, maximizing the natural variety within the preserve instead of moving locations.
What to wear for a Santa Barbara Engagement Session
Francesca began the session in a beautiful yellow and white sundress that perfectly complemented the vibrant green hills — especially after the recent rains. The soft colors paired beautifully with the oak trees, tall grass, and natural rock textures throughout the preserve.
Midway through the session, we returned to the car for an outfit change. Francesca chose a black dress with gold floral details, which paired beautifully with the moodier tones that sunset began to bring. The shift in styling allowed us to create more dramatic images, including silhouette photos as the sun dipped lower behind the hills.
Outfit changes are a wonderful way to add variety to your Santa Barbara engagement gallery, especially when staying in one location.
A Soft-Guided Approach to Engagement Photography
Francesca and Connor shared that they had never had professional photos taken together before, and Francesca admitted she was nervous leading up to the session — especially about what to wear.
This is incredibly common.
Rather than jumping in with high energy or heavy posing, I take a soft-guided approach. I read the room. I pay attention to energy. Both Francesca and Connor felt naturally introverted, so we started slowly.
Simple movement.Walking along the trail.Holding hands.Looking at each other naturally.
I guide hands, posture, and small adjustments while giving space for authentic interaction. I find that movement creates the most natural expressions — the way light catches your hair when you turn, the quiet laughter between prompts, the in-between glances.
Francesca mentioned that getting Connor’s natural smile can sometimes be tricky — but as we eased into the session and allowed the energy to build naturally, we shared plenty of laughs along the way.
One of my favorite details? They always kiss each other’s noses — something that felt so uniquely them and was important to incorporate throughout the session.
Why I Recommend San Marcos Foothills for Engagement Sessions
This Santa Barbara engagement location truly offers:
Ocean views
Mountain backdrops
Oak trees and natural rock textures
Rolling green hills in the spring
Beautiful sunset light
Silhouette opportunities
Privacy compared to more crowded beach areas
If I were planning a full engagement session here, I would consider starting at San Marcos Foothills Preserve and then heading to either the Santa Barbara Courthouse or one of the beaches nearby for additional variety. That combination gives couples multiple looks for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and wedding-day displays.
