Montana de Oro Proposal | Zachary & Rhiannon’s Bluff Trail Engagement

Montaña de Oro State Park is one of the most breathtaking places on the Central Coast, which is why it’s a location I frequently recommend as a Montana de Oro proposal photographer. Between the dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and quiet trails, it creates the perfect setting for an intimate and meaningful proposal.
Zachary reached out a few months before his proposal to start planning the moment. He had originally considered proposing before dinner at Windows on the Water in Morro Bay, but he was also open to ideas for proposing somewhere more scenic — either Morro Rock or Montaña de Oro State Park.
After I shared a few galleries and explained why Montaña de Oro is one of my favorite proposal locations in San Luis Obispo County, he quickly decided it was the perfect place.
Planning the Perfect Montana de Oro Proposal
Zachary had never visited Montaña de Oro before, so part of my role as his San Luis Obispo proposal photographer was helping him feel confident about the plan.
We chose the Bluff Trail, one of the most beautiful and accessible trails in the park. It overlooks the coastline and sits above Spooner’s Cove, giving couples dramatic ocean views while still offering quiet spots away from crowds.
About a week before the proposal, Zachary reached out again — understandably a little nervous and wanting to make sure he knew exactly where to go.
To make things simple, I created a detailed plan for him that included:
A location pin showing where to park
A map of the Bluff Trail route
A marker ribbon along the trail so he’d know where to turn
A note that I would be wearing a red hat so he could easily spot me and know I was in position.
Having these little details in place helped him relax and focus on the moment.
The Proposal on the Bluff Trail
When Zachary and Rhiannon arrived at Montaña de Oro, they walked along the Bluff Trail together, taking in the views of the ocean and the cliffs above Spooner’s Cove below.
They paused along the trail, standing together and looking out at the water.
Zachary said a few words to Rhiannon before turning toward her and getting down on one knee.
Once I saw the moment unfold, I moved closer to capture the proposal and the excitement that followed. The joy and surprise in those first few minutes after a proposal are always some of my favorite images to photograph.
Engagement Photos at Montaña de Oro State Park
After the proposal, we took some time to explore the area for engagement photos around Montaña de Oro.
This location offers so much variety within a short distance. We captured images:
Along the Bluff Trail with sweeping ocean views
On a quiet path lined with beautiful mustard wildflowers
Near Spooner’s Cove, one of the most iconic spots in the park
Their portraits were a mix of romantic, playful, and relaxed moments — which perfectly matched their personalities.
Zachary & Rhiannon’s Story
Zachary and Rhiannon actually met at the gym. For months, they had noticed each other but hadn’t made the first move.
Eventually, Rhiannon decided to break the ice. One day Zachary showed up without his usual hat, and she jokingly teased him that he had been “catfishing” everyone by hiding his hair under it.
That playful moment sparked their first conversation.
Not long after, they went on their first date, and before long they moved in together. By the time Zachary proposed at Montaña de Oro, they had already been together for six years.
They were already planning their wedding — they just needed the proposal to happen first.
Why Montaña de Oro Is One of the Best Proposal Locations on the Central Coast
If you’re planning a proposal in San Luis Obispo County, Montaña de Oro State Park is easily one of the most beautiful places to do it.
The park offers:
Dramatic ocean cliffs
Quiet, intimate trails
Wildflowers and natural coastal landscapes
Stunning sunset views
Easy access to locations like Bluff Trail and Spooner’s Cove
For couples who want something scenic, romantic, and a little more private than popular beach spots, Montaña de Oro is truly special.
Planning Your Montaña de Oro Proposal
Planning a proposal in a location like Montaña de Oro can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re traveling from out of town. As a Montana de Oro proposal photographer, I help guide couples through the entire process.
This often includes:
Location scouting
Timeline planning
Weather monitoring
Discreet photography coverage
Engagement portraits immediately after the proposal
My goal is to help you focus on the moment while I take care of the details behind the scenes.
