One of the Best Places to Propose Near Santa Barbara
An organic proposal different than anything I’ve ever photographed — this Sunstone Proposal with Tour and Private Tasting was one of the most natural and thoughtful moments I’ve witnessed. Bobbie planned a surprise engagement at Sunstone Winery, perfectly disguised as a private anniversary wine tasting. Sunstone makes these moments special and intimate. Which is why Sunstone Winery is one of my most popular locations for proposals.
Blending In at Sunstone Winery
To keep the surprise intact, I arrived early and checked in for my own “private tasting,” blending in among the other guests. Maria, the Sunstone host, led Bobbie and Juliet through the vineyard, giving them a full Sunstone Winery tour — they picked grapes off the vines, wandered the terrace, and explored the courtyard while she shared bits of the winery’s history.
It just so happened to be their 10-year anniversary. High school sweethearts since age 14, dating since 17, they’ve spent most of their lives growing together. The perfect story for such a meaningful setting.
The Surprise Proposal Moment
Maria “forgot” to take them over to the production area, then casually invited them to go check it out before wrapping up their tasting. That’s when Bobbie led Juliet to the archway, paused, and proposed. The moment was completely organic — just the two of them surrounded by vines, soft light, and quiet emotion.
Afterward, I got to walk them back through the same route they had just taken. We retraced their steps through the vineyard, capturing the emotion, laughter, and connection that unfolded naturally. They shared how much they love grapes — so we tucked Juliet’s new ring into a handful of grapes for a few playful photos.
A Photographer’s Favorite Type of Proposal
As a Santa Barbara Wedding Photographer and Proposal Photographer, this session reminded me how much magic there is in simplicity. No staged setups or big productions — just a real story unfolding in real time. Sunstone remains one of the Best Places to Propose near Santa Barbara because of how effortlessly romantic it feels. Between the vineyard views, the private tastings, and the golden light, it’s a perfect backdrop for timeless moments like this one.
