Pregnancy is such a beautiful, fleeting season — one that deserves to be celebrated and remembered. Whether it’s your first baby or you’re growing your family, a maternity session is the perfect way to document this incredible chapter.
As a San Luis Obispo photographer, I’ve photographed countless maternity sessions across the Central Coast, from quiet sand dunes in Pismo Beach to lush green hills and cozy at-home sessions. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a session that feels natural, meaningful, and true to you.
When to Schedule Your Maternity Photos with your Family Photographer
Timing is everything when it comes to maternity sessions!
The Sweet Spot: I recommend scheduling your session between 28 and 34 weeks.
Your bump will be beautifully round, but you’ll still have the energy to move comfortably and enjoy the experience.
If you’re carrying multiples or have a higher chance of early delivery, plan for closer to 28–30 weeks.
Pro Tip: Book early! My calendar fills up quickly, especially during spring and fall when the Central Coast is at its most beautiful.

Choosing a Meaningful Location on the Central Coast
The location you choose will set the tone for your entire session. Think about places that reflect your personality, your story, or your growing family’s favorite spots.
Here are some of my favorite ideas:
Pismo Beach – Classic Central Coast beauty with wide sandy beaches, dramatic sunsets, and easy parking for little ones or grandparents. Perfect for a relaxed, natural vibe.
Morro Bay – Iconic views of Morro Rock with plenty of space for kids to run and play.
Your Home or Nursery – A cozy, intimate option that captures the space where you’ll bring your baby home.
Scenic Trails or Parks – Wildflowers, tall grass, and rolling hills make for timeless backdrops.
Tip: Choose somewhere meaningful. Maybe it’s where you had your first date, a place you love to visit as a family, or simply a spot where you feel at ease.
Props to Bring for Your Session
Props aren’t necessary, but they can add a personal touch and help tell your story.
Consider bringing:
Ultrasound photo – A sweet way to celebrate your little one before they arrive.
Baby shoes or onesie – Perfect for “coming soon” images.
A blanket or swaddle – Can be used for cozy shots or to sit on during beach sessions.
Sentimental heirlooms – A family blanket, handmade toy, or other meaningful keepsake.
For siblings: A favorite book or toy to keep little ones happy and involved.
Pro Tip: Keep it simple! One or two thoughtful items are better than a bag full of props. The focus should always be on your connection and your growing family.

Tips for Sessions with Toddlers or Older Siblings
Including older siblings in your maternity session adds even more love and energy to your photos — but it can also be unpredictable.
Here’s how to set everyone up for success:
Schedule morning sessions when kids are well-rested and happy.
Make it fun! Play games, run on the beach, or have them kiss the baby bump.
Go with the flow. The sweetest images are often candid moments you didn’t plan.
Pack snacks and a favorite toy to keep little ones engaged between shots.
Why a Maternity Session Matters
Your pregnancy is a unique season you’ll never get back. A maternity session isn’t just about photos — it’s about pausing to celebrate the love, anticipation, and excitement surrounding your growing family.
As a San Luis Obispo maternity photographer, my goal is to make your session relaxed and fun, while creating timeless images you’ll treasure for years to come.
