Getting the whole family together on vacation is a rare and special opportunity. What better way to remember those moments than with an extended family photography session? The McClain family chose Morro Bay as the backdrop for their portraits, and the result was a gallery full of connection, laughter, and beautiful California scenery.

We had to reschedule this session due to weather — but the morning we landed on couldn’t have been more perfect. With soft light, calm air, and plenty of space for the kids to run, Morro Bay gave us the best of everything for a big group photo session.

Timing Tips for Extended Family Photos

When it comes to extended family sessions, timing makes all the difference.

  • Mornings are often the best choice for little kids and larger groups. Everyone is fresh, the light is soft, and you’re done before the day’s activities begin.

  • Evenings can be gorgeous with golden hour light, but sometimes they clash with family dinners or leave little ones overtired.

For the McClain family, the morning timing worked out perfectly — relaxed, happy, and ready to enjoy the rest of their day together.

Why Choose Morro Bay for Family Photos?

Morro Bay is one of my favorite Central Coast family photo locations because it offers so much variety in a single spot. Easy parking makes it accessible for grandparents and kids, while the landscape provides multiple backdrops without much walking.

In one session, you can have:

  • Rolling sand dunes with soft textures

  • Tall grass that adds warmth and depth to portraits

  • The iconic ocean backdrop with Morro Rock in the distance

It’s the perfect mix of coastal charm and convenience, especially for extended family photos where variety and comfort are key.

Capturing Memories That Last

The McClains’ session was filled with laughter, hugs, and those in-between moments that truly tell the story of a family. Extended sessions like this are about more than one group shot — they’re about documenting relationships across generations and preserving them for years to come.

As part of the process, I support in planning and come prepared for your session with a list of group combinations to make sure we dont miss a thing.
